Aspect Interpretation
Aspects: The Energy Connections Between Planets
Aspects are the most narrative part of the birth chart. They describe the angular relationships between two planets—are they cooperating, opposing, or ignoring each other?
The Five Major Aspects
Conjunction (0°) — Fusion
Two energies merge into one, enhancing each other. ☉ conjunct ♃ = a blend of confidence and optimism, naturally bringing an expansive vitality. However, conjunctions can also blur the boundaries between the two energies.
Opposition (180°) — Pull
Two energies face each other, like a seesaw. You need to find balance between the two ends. ☽ opposition ♄ = a tug-of-war between emotional needs and responsibilities. Oppositions bring awareness—you can see what is on the other side.
Square (90°) — Friction
The most tense aspect. Two energies collide, creating pressure and drive. ♀ square ♇ = a deep love that also has a strong desire for control. Squares are catalysts for growth; without them, life lacks motivation.
Trine (120°) — Flow
Natural talent and ease. ☿ trine ♅ = quick thinking and innate innovation. Trines represent "gifts," but because they come easily, they can sometimes be undervalued or undeveloped.
Sextile (60°) — Opportunity
A slight harmony, representing potential opportunities. It is weaker than a trine but requires you to actively engage. Like tools on a table—you have to pick them up and use them.
Orb
Aspects do not need to be exact to 0 degrees. Generally speaking:
- Conjunctions, oppositions, squares: orb of ±8°
- Trines, sextiles: orb of ±6°
- The smaller the orb (the more precise the angle), the stronger the influence.
Aspect Patterns
When three or more planets form a network of aspects, a "pattern" emerges:
- Grand Trine: Three planets each 120° apart, forming a stable triangle. Strong talents but may be too complacent.
- T-Square: Two planets in opposition, with a third square to both ends. High pressure but extremely motivating.
- Grand Cross: Four squares forming a cross. Life is full of challenges but has great potential.
- Kite: A Grand Trine plus one opposition, combining talent with a directional goal.
How Do We Use Aspects in Interpretation?
Aspects are the core logic of our analysis. Our steps are:
- Identify the tightest aspects — Those with the smallest orbs are the most prominent themes in your life.
- Distinguish between challenging aspects and resource aspects — Squares and oppositions are the issues you need to face; trines and sextiles are your supports.
- Trace the aspect chain — If planet A squares B, and B trines C → the pressure from A can find a way out through C.
- Combine with transits — When transiting planets trigger difficult natal aspects, that theme will come to the forefront.
For example, if your natal chart has ☽ square ♇ (issues of emotional control), when transiting ♇ conjuncts your ☽, this issue will be strongly activated—but it is also the best healing opportunity.
Understanding aspects means understanding the dialogue patterns between your inner forces. Some dialogues are harmonious choruses, while others are intense debates—but all dialogues are part of your growth.
